These tests are simple breath tests by a device called the bodygem. There are many caloric formulas available on the Internet, which are created for the general public; however, much like the mass diet programs available, they do not take into account the unique factors of each individual that impact metabolism.

Why is metabolism different among different individuals? Not only is metabolism affected by weight, age and gender (which most on-line calculators use to compute), body composition or the ratio of muscle to fat significantly impacts the rate that calories are metabolized. In addition, hormone levels can influence how your body uses the nutrients and calories consumed.

If you simply trust a quick Internet formula you may be eating too much or too little for what you need (or what your body needs) in order to meet your fitness goals. For example, two women weigh exactly the same and are the same height, yet have very different calorie requirements. If they follow the same weight management plan, one may gain weight, remain the same, or lose weight when she was simply trying to maintain her weight.

Knowing your metabolic rate gives you an accurate daily calorie target. Regardless of whether you are trying to gain muscle, lose weight, or become more trim and fit, you will know exactly what your needs are and begin to adjust your diet with accuracy.

Foods Without High Fructose Corn Syrup

As always, I am fighting against the impact of High Fructose Corn Syrup in our food. How do I know? It was no longer difficult to find a parking space when I pulled into the parking lot at the gym this morning. I knew it was coming, it does every year, but today I was sad thinking that once again the goal to be healthier only lasted a few weeks for so many people.

Here are a couple of insights into how to keep your New Year's Resolutions after the novelty has worn off.

1. The key to change is to focus on what you are doing right. When you do well, or stick to your word, it gives you confidence. Confidence breeds success. Keep a Success Journal. Each night right down everything you did right during the day and re-read those entries to inspire and motivate you to keep going. Remember, success can be measured in little, tiny accomplishments.

2. Believe in the process knowing that it is going to be hard. You have not failed because it is hard. You have not failed because you are tempted by brownies at work. You have not failed because this morning you wanted to push the snooze button one more time. Sometimes we believe that being tempted is failure. Not so. Change is difficult at best. Go into it knowing that it is going to be hard and develop a strategy for those hard moments. You will be tempted!

3. Check it off. Often we become immobilized and don't know where to begin once we have slid off of our plan. Get a small index card and write 3 simple tasks that you will do today towards your goal. Each task gets a big check mark. The one check mark will feel like a victory and usually gives you the emotional boost you need to move on to the next.

Do not abandon your goals! Get up and get going again.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

You may be wondering what is fructose? What is the problem with HF? And how does it affect my health? Fructose is the Sweetener found in fruit; however, when it is taken out of the fruit and added to glucose to make table sugar, HfC syrup, and hundreds of other varieties, it is altered because it no longer has the pulp and fiber to keep it stable, digestible, and safe. When Fructose is stripped from the fruit it becomes a carbohydrate which is metabolized like a poison to the liver. It is metabolized like ethanol, which is alcohol without the buzz. Walk in a public place and look at the people you see and count how many look like they have beer bellies. Well 68% of Americans do and it’s not from beer. So what can we do? First become aware, read labels and ingredients, begin replacing processed foods with fresh foods, start changing your pallet to appreciate natural sweetness. Next, let the food industry know you don’t want sweet, you want healthy. Lastly, be an advocate for your friends and loved ones, educate them about the Health risks including: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, addiction, metabolic syndrome and heart disease. Usually, after a couple of weeks of working together, the client discovers that overeating is actually just a symptom of, “I need to get in control of my life.” Food and health seem to follow the pattern of all other areas of our lives, or better said, food and health seem to follow how we respond to all other areas of our lives.
With the complexity of life what can we do to respond better? What can we do to encourage a healthy lifestyle?

1. Eliminate Negative Mind Chatter: Often referred to as “Mindful Living.” Notice what you are saying to yourself day in and day out. If your thoughts are negative you will look for something to soothe and comfort. Food can be a quick pick me up with a really quick plummet.

2. Maintain Relationships: Keep your relationships healthy and strong. We need real connections that stimulate us emotionally and intellectually.

3. Success: We all need to feel successful. Make goals to ensure you are always progressing. Having a bad day? Make those goals real small and then build on each success.

4. Journal: I hate to even say this because we often envision the boring journal assignment from school. You can journal on a napkin while at lunch. The point is the connection between the tangible process of writing and verbalizing your words engages you emotionally in a new way and problems and feelings become clear.

5. Manage Stress: “Manage” is the key word. If you don’t have a process for managing stress eating can easily become your default. Choose how you will manage stress, find the one thing that helps you consistently and make it your stress manager.

Make your healthy lifestyle about life not food. The shift will give you great results!

How to Stop Emotional Eating When You are Grieving

I wanted to share a great story about a client who found an alternative to eating her way through grief and mourning. This client consented to offer this story in hopes that it will help those who are grieving over one of the many losses we all experience. I’ll refer to this client as Sharon (of course you know it’s not her real name).

Sharon experienced a loss that was not only sad but complicated, frustrating, and far reaching in her personal and extended world. I won’t explain the details, but it was more than she had ever imagined experiencing. Losses come in so many shapes and forms: Death, divorce, job loss, illness, betrayal, and more than could ever be listed.

One morning Sharon found herself in the kitchen picking away at the wonderful chocolate cake a dear friend had brought her family as part of a supportive and appreciated meal. The problem was that Sharon was emotionally eating and headed towards eating the entire cake! Sharon knew this would not heal her heart and remembered her Emotional Ammo, “STOP! What I really need is….” Sharon decided to choose an activity that would raise her feel-good endorphins and actually help herself through her grief.

Sharon, who is a recreational cyclist, decided to choose one bike route that would become her “grieving bike ride”. She chose a route that was challenging for her and ended at the top of a difficult assent. Whenever she was grieving, she would hop on her bike and ride this specific route until she physically and emotionally felt some relief from her grief. Her experience has been life changing and symbolic of her stages of grief.

1. Bike Ride One: Cried the entire ride, actually wailed the entire time, but the physical exertion helped the crying to a crescendo and release; by the time I was to the top of the hill, I felt this huge release, both physically and emotionally.

2. Bike Ride Two: Same course, different experience. I was mad – so mad that my life hadn’t gone the way I had envisioned. Angry adrenaline rush, some pretty intense conversations that I wouldn’t want anyone else to hear. Lots of cursing in my dialogue about how life was unfair. I felt like I could conquer some of my demons when I reached the top of the hill.

3. Bike Ride Three: Felt so blah today. Numb from the pain and frustration. Hate to see my children hurting. Just my luck – a head wind! Slowed me down, way down, just surrendered that it would be a slower ride and a lot more difficult.

4. Bike Ride Four: Starting to like this course. I know when the hard hills are coming and can prepare for them. This feels familiar, not so frightening and overwhelming. Really feel victorious at the top of the hill.

5. Bike Ride Five: Reluctant to go but know I need this today. Oh no! A detour! I can’t handle a detour; I’m use to my course. This is bad for my mental game. I want to turn around; I can’t handle any deviation from what I expected. Hardest emotional day – the detour, the unexpected, life.

6. Bike Ride Six: Fell off and scraped up my leg, hated the music on my iPod shuffle, flat tire.

7. Bike Ride Seven: Went a different route, which I used to consider hard. It was nothing compared to my grieving ride. What a breeze.

8. Bike Ride Eight: So many interruptions. Had to stop at bike store to fix tire, forgot sunscreen, so went back. Had to stop at drugstore for something to eat.

9. Bike Ride Nine: Flat tire again! Called someone to come pick me up.

10 Bike Ride Ten: I’m not crying, not yelling, not scared, prepared for the unexpected, excited to conquer this hill one more time, thinking of everything I can conquer knowing that I can conquer a difficult ride, feel stronger than I’ve ever felt.

Let’s all find the better way to deal with emotions. When it is difficult, choose an activity to represent your hardship, and beat it in a constructive way. No more hurting ourselves with food, or other harmful indulgences!

Ride The Wave

Ride the Wave this Summer!

We often believe that when we hit our healthy weight, we will be free from cravings once and for all. Unfortunately, environmental triggers, physiological triggers, emotional triggers, and addictive triggers will still be hiding around some unsuspecting corner. The problem arises when we feel like a failure simply because we really want to eat that piece of cake or fast food that we know will stimulate the addictive eating area of the brain, sending us into a mindless eating frenzy.

Well, stop the demoralizing mind chatter, and realize that you will never be able to eliminate being exposed to triggers or cravings. The goal is to eliminate the affect and power these triggers have on your actions. Keep building your tools and strength, and you will soon find that desire trumps those cravings and triggers.

I like to compare cravings to riding a wave. They come in big and strong, but when you ride them out, they lose all strength and power. Each time you master a craving, it is like mastering that big wave: You become better skilled and masterful. It soon becomes natural.

Remember, cravings are common for all of us; they are not a sign of weakness or failure. Ride the wave with patience and persistence, and feel your own strength as the wave loses all power.

Memorial Day mind chatter

Next week is Memorial Day, where we honor those who have carved the way, creating the road for the present generation. For many people, Memorial Day is a sad, morbid holiday, which focuses on death and the dead. But for me, Memorial Day is a celebration of hard work and sacrifice – not only of our service men, but all those before us who made our personal lives better. Another reason I love Memorial Day is it kicks off summer! Yea, finally the end of short days and bad weather and the promise of sunny, carefree days of summer.

It is also the beginning of fewer layers of clothing, lots of parties, and the realization that perhaps you are not too happy with what has become of your physique over the winter. So, let’s make a choice. What is your mind chatter going to be? I’m a slob; I can’t go anywhere; I can’t enjoy the fun activities of summer because of my body; I’ve done it again! Or is it going to be: Yea, fresh fruit, in season vegetables, lots of fun movement, and social gatherings that feed me emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Choose the latter; it will make all the difference in your ability to be healthy. Negative mind chatter will always lead you to the quick fix – food. Positive mind chatter will always lead you to healthy choices and a happier life.

This Memorial Day, make a choice. Choose to focus on celebrating life, great sacrifice, and a great life. Kick off the summer with positive mind chatter, focusing on good food, friends, family, and good health!

Don't Fall Into The Diet Trap

The weather is getting warmer and it's time to pull out our summer clothes. What will fit? Or rather, what won't. The temptation to crash diet is strong. You want to look good and feel good this year. Yeah. This will be the season to make it all happen. What new diet programs are out there that you haven't tried yet?

So many of us have fallen prey to the quick fix and false hope of dieting. Perhaps we even lose some or all of the weight we intended. But, the reality is that 92% of people who diet regain every pound they lose. Restricting food makes no sense to our brain, our body or our metabolism. Diet failure is not about a lack of willpower or discipline. Deprivation chemically triggers increased hunger for survival in rebellion against the perceived starvation. It can happen from simply missing a meal. Simply put, we don't fail at dieting. Our bodies are designed to make us fail in order to survive.

A lot of people ask, "Is Totell a diet?" The answer is, "No." Totell is freedom from dieting...freedom from food obsessions...freedom from self-contempt. Our approach is simple, straightforward, and scientfically proven to help you lose weight naturally and permanently. We explain why you overeat which allows us to help you stop. Diets are the problem. Totell is the solution.

Bunny Flop

Yes, I flopped yesterday. Of course eating Easter candy and having a great meal is part of the enjoyment of food and special occasions but I drifted into addictive eating at the end of the day. It was the nestle crunch Easter eggs. It only took four eggs to set off my amygdala deep inside my brain and soon I wanted the entire Easter basket and all of the left-over dessert. The good news is I knew exactly what had been triggered in my brain and what I needed to do to curve the urge to keep on eating. I began looking for non-food activities that would mellow out the dopamine and increase my serotonin naturally, it took about an hour for the addictive thoughts and desires to subside. Yes, I ate too much but I learned more about how much I can eat before the amygdala goes crazy in my mind. Remember we are all different so do your experiments and keep learning more about yourself.

Jana

Potato Chips For Breakfast?

Potato Chips for Breakfast?

The key to weight management is not another diet with someone telling you what, when, and how to eat. The key to weight management is understanding the "why" to cravings, both physical and emotional. Let me give you an example of a "why" to a craving and what could have become a downward spiral into the black hole of guilt and eating.

I began a new form of movement this past week. It is an indoor cycling camp, which lasts 5 months, and is a pretty rigorous training to prepare for next spring’s outdoor road cycling. Because it is new to my body and the sessions are longer than I have been currently experiencing, they have been fairly difficult for me. Well, when I returned from class this morning, there was a bag of potato chips left on the counter from the night before. I don't really like potato chips, nor are they a food that sets off addictive eating or obsessive thoughts for me. However, I took a few chips to eat while I was preparing my breakfast. Oh wow! They tasted so good, and soon I was grabbing more and more. I stopped, asked myself, "what is going on? Why am I eating these chips like crazy? What is it that they are giving me that is creating this craving?" I soon realized that it was the salt. My body had actually been depleted from my new exercise of important salt, and my body was letting me know.

Now I wouldn't recommend getting your salt intake from potato chips, but that is actually what I did. They tasted so good, and I needed the salt. So instead of beating myself up, I just ate potato chips for breakfast. What did I learn from it? I need to watch my salt intake when I am exercising and exerting a lot of effort and sweat. Then, I need to make sure I get enough salt from a healthy source to compensate, or I risk having those very strong cravings for anything with salt.

Listen to your body! Find the real reason of cravings. Emotional and physical changes cause physiological cravings. For me, it wasn't any of those dastardly treats that got under my skin or into my stomach, it was my mother's homemade chili, rolls, homemade sugar and pumpkin cookies, and even doughnuts (which I don't particularly like) that sent me reeling into the big black hole of bingeing on Halloween night. I reminded myself, before heading to my mother's party, that food is not love, that I can choose what I eat, that if I stay away from sugar I will be able to hold to my healthy goals only to last – hmmm let me think – two minutes before I was devouring the cookies and moving on to everything else with vim and vigor.

I left my mother's party with a stomachache and that gnawing negative mind chatter, "I always do this; I have no discipline; what is wrong with me?" It reminds me of the doomed King Sisyphus from Greek mythology who was punished by being cursed to roll a huge boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, repeatedly for eternity. In my most dramatic self talk, I repeated, "Will this always be my battle? Can't I just eat one and be done when I am at my mom's? Will this ever end?"

My first response was that I will always be fighting my mother's cheese, butter, cream and sugar. But my more educated and calm response was that no, I know what it takes to change neural pathways in my brain. This change is hard business, but it is achievable. We must commit to the process, the time, the patience and the endurance, whether it is a day, a month, a year, or even many years.

Neural pathways in our brain, which are linked to cravings and comfort, are like ruts in the brain. It takes lots of driving over them, grading them, and filling them in to create new pathways. It took years to create the old ruts and, although with conscious effort it can be shorter, it takes a lot of hard work to change them. Sometimes we give up and consider ourselves "doomed" simply because we don't realize how long it really takes. We feel defeated and give up. Well, I'm here to tell you, don't give up! Just keep going. If you haven't reached the transformation, it doesn't mean your efforts have gone to waste. Those efforts are smoothing out those ruts, and if your neural signals do get stuck in part of those old grooves, learn from it quickly. Get right back to the task of changing your responses and neural pathways.

It can be done. I know it, because I work on it daily. Is it easy? Actually, once you truly understand cravings and what is causing them, it is easier. When you understand what is happening physically in your mind and body, it is easier not to beat yourself up emotionally and to stay your course. Keep pushing the rock up the hill, and you will be surprised when one day it just lands in a nice grassy area and never budges again. Keep going; you can do it!

How Long Does it Take to Conquer Emotional Eating?

A dear client was complaining that she believed she would never have her emotional eating under control. When she had first come to Totell she was bingeing daily, not only hating her body, but hating herself. She has come a long way; her binges are down to a couple per month, with the duration of each binge being minimized significantly. But still, she wants to be completely free from emotional eating, and she gets discouraged when she dips. She asks, "How long does it take to really overcome something, to really change a behavior, to really make lasting change?"

What a great question! Don't we really give up because we think it is taking too long, or progress is too slow? Research has shown that in order to master a skill or a talent, it takes 10,000 hours of practice. This seems like a lot of hours, but when they calculate the practice hours of concert pianists, professional baseball players, computer wizards, or anyone who is an expert at a talent or skill, the numbers all matched up: 10,000 hours. So how does this concept apply to you and emotional eating?

You have probably put in your 10,000 hours creating bad habits, bad thought processes, bad eating patterns, bad self-talk, bad everything about your body and how you treat it. What will it take to make all of those patterns positive? A lot of hours. Your mind is not going to reverse without the 10,000 hours. Those detrimental thoughts and patterns create grooves in your brain with your neural pathways, and you have got to take your thoughts literally out of the ruts, and, through practice, make new pathways. Well, this re-training is easy unless you give up. The time will pass. Just conquer your mind daily, knowing that each moment you put in is one more moment towards your 10,000 hours. Fortunately, you do have some good thoughts of yourself already banked – it is rare that someone has never thought good thoughts about herself. Build on the good. Don't berate yourself because you think your progress is too slow. It's not. It's normal. It just takes time.

You can do this. Conquer your mind! Conquer your weight!

When Would You Stop Eating?

When would you stop eating?

I had an odd thought yesterday. Suppose you had a large plate of your favorite food and you began eating. But after a few bites, you noticed that the amount of food on your plate remained the same as when you first started eating. No matter how much you ate, the same amount of food was left on your plate. You really couldn't measure how much you had eaten. There was no way of knowing when you had finished your meal by the plate being empty, because it just kept replenishing itself. Would you know when to stop? If there were no way to measure or calculate how much food you were eating, how full would you want your stomach to get before you stopped?

Try this little mental exercise while you are eating sometime: Pretend that the amount of food will remain the same no matter how much you eat. How will you know when to stop if the plate is never clean or partially empty? Can you use your hunger index or full index to determine when you have had enough? Can you feel how full your stomach is? With no external clues, can you listen to your body to know when it has been properly refueled and has actually had enough?

Try it! Test your ability to trust yourself and intuitively tell yourself when you have eaten enough. Your body knows; you just have to learn to listen.

If you want to learn more about W.H.I. eating, I have often run across the emotional eating tip: “Eat from a smaller plate.” The idea behind the tip is that it will trick you into thinking you are eating more, and you won’t feel so deprived, thereby empowering you to continue to diet. I’m not convinced our minds are that simple, but I would like to offer a modified tip: “Eat from a plate.” That’s it! Simply try to eat from a plate. Ask yourself how often do you eat from a fast food sack, a paper covered tray, a cellophane wrapper in the car, or standing in the kitchen while eating right from the dish the food was prepared in? It’s a little crazy to think we are soooo busy that we can’t get a plate out, dish up a meal, and sit down to actually nourish our bodies with food. We have minimized taking care of ourselves and nourishing ourselves to a rushed activity with nothing more than our food served in paper or anything else that is convenient and fast.

I think you will find that eating from a plate makes the food so much more enjoyable, and you actually notice THAT you are eating and WHAT you are eating. Eating is your most basic need. Let’s treat eating right. Let’s eat from a plate, and actually pause while we nourish ourselves!

Big Change, Small Efforts!

How do we really create the life of wellness we so desperately want? Robert Collier, founder of the once popular Collier’s Weekly, coined the phrase “Success is the sum of many small efforts.” We often create this huge dream of what our lives should look like, and we become overwhelmed and discouraged when we wake up from that dream to find that nothing has changed. Big change comes with small efforts! It actually is a nice thought: We don’t have to do anything big or grand, we just have to do something small today. How wonderful!

My son is a motorcross racer and wants to improve his performance committing to working out daily to achieve his goals. As many of us do, he gets discouraged waiting for the BIG CHANGE in his body to arrive. While waking him up this morning I simply said, “You want to be your best at racing, don’t you?”

Of course, he responded with a sleepy, “Yes.”

To which I reminded him, “All you have to do is get up and do 30 minutes of cardio before school. That is all you have to think about for the next 30 minutes, and you will reach your goal. You don’t have to think about tomorrow or the next day; just think about the next thirty minutes.”

It sounds simple but it is true: If we just make our small efforts over and over again they soon add up to our big accomplishments. Be specific; choose that goal, and break down those small efforts.

If you want help in reaching your big goals and need help in keeping those small efforts going every day, call Totell 801.231.0001. Now, I don’t know if this is a coincidence or related but I slept wonderfully last night! I didn’t wake up once and felt so refreshed when I got up this morning. I immediately thought upon realizing how well I slept, “the drink works! That’s it, this is all I am going to drink for the rest of my life.” It was a silly thought but more than once, in my quest for great nutrition and health, I have heard of something that is nutritionally beneficial and thought I am going to eat that, pop that and overdose on that to make sure I am getting the most out of the promises that are made.

The truth is all foods, that are natural, are good for us. All of them have wonderful benefits and promises but we don’t have to become obsessed with one berry, fruit, vegetable or oil in order to live at optimal health. In fact, if we learn to eat a variety in small amounts we will actually receive all of the benefits from all of them.

Well, how do we do that when there are thousands upon thousands of choices? Eat what is naturally in season and just eat small, normal amounts. If you look at health as something that cycles yearly, just like the seasons, you begin to understand that there are natural foods that should be eaten throughout the year at the natural harvest time which will give your body a more natural and healthy rhythm. Eat berries when they are naturally ripe, eat apples in the fall, oranges are always best around Christmas and artichokes are always a treat in the spring and no more hard flavorless tomatoes any time of year. Nutritionally it makes sense and biochemically it makes sense. You can get every micronutrient you need when you see the benefit of eating with the seasons.

Self-Sabotage, Weight Loss, Weight loss Coach

In all areas of our lives, self-sabotage is a common burden. Christians and non-christians can both identify with the frustration of Paul found in Romans 7, For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Why can it be so difficult to mesh what we want with our physical actions? Self-sabotage is all too common in the world of goals, and especially, weight loss. To fight the fight, we have to know what we are doing to sabotage ourselves. Can you identify 4 ways that you defeat yourself on a regular basis and write them down? Perhaps you procrastinate or are easily discouraged. Do you prioritize your life based on an unhealthy belief that everyone else's needs are more important than yours? Do you allow the least tiny excuse to be exaggerated or debilitating? After you have written your self-sabotaging behavior, ask yourself: "Do I lack a skill, knowledge, a true desire, or motivation to accomplish this goal? Be brutally honest, and become aware of what is really holding you back. Make a plan to beat your self-sabotaging behavior. Find a friend or a coach to hold you accountable to your new process or mode of operation. Beat the internal battle of self sabotage. How are we all doing on our New Year's Resolutions? Over 40% of Americans vow to lose weight each January 1st, but 90% fail to ever reach that goal; of those who do, 90% gain back the weight. How sad! Our best intentions will never be reached unless we answer the WHY! Why do we eat when we aren't hungry? Why do we eat foods we know aren't good for us? Why don't we exercise when we know we feel better when we do? There are real answers to the "why". Some are physiologically based; some are neurologically based, and some are psychologically based. Understanding the "why" will liberate you and free you from those things that are holding you back, and it goes far beyond just eating. Sit today and ask yourself some "why" questions, and don't settle with the first answer! Ask why, then why to that answer, and why to the next answer. Get to the bottom of what is really going on, and see how much easier it is to motivate yourself to keep those resolutions going. If you need help understanding the "why" go to www.TotellWellness.com

Emotional Eating

My clients ask me all the time about emotional eating. Fortunately, that's my specialty. So, I tell them to think about the current movie out, He's Just Not That Into You. In this movie, we see one of the female characters upset, sitting at home in front of the television, and what is she doing? Eating ice cream for solace! Many of my clients, who are female, find comfort in eating to console themselves. Because women are nurturers, they have realized that nourishment offers solace and comfort. Certainly, young mothers have learned that feeding a crying baby will cause the baby to be comforted and happy. This wiring of the female brain to nurture makes turning to food the natural way to find solace for any emotional distress we may encounter. It's natural, but can be very unhealthy if done often or to extreme.

My company, Totell (see www.TotellWellness.com) has a program that pinpoints the physiological needs our bodies have and why we turn to certain foods to meet those needs. Scientifically, our bodies desire certain hormones to bring balance (i.e., comfort).
